Adani Group pledges $100B for AI data centers in India

On Monday, Indian conglomerate Adani Group announced it will invest $100 billion over the next decade to build data centers specialized for AI workloads—computing tasks specifically designed for artificial intelligence processing—across India. The company expects this investment plan, which will run through 2035, to catalyze an additional $150 billion in related investments, resulting in a $250 billion AI infrastructure ecosystem in the country.

The announcement coincided with India’s AI Impact Summit, where global tech leaders from companies including OpenAI, Nvidia, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google are meeting. Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani described the plan as a long-term bet on the convergence of energy and computing. “India will not be a mere consumer in the AI age,” Adani said, noting that the group aims to help build a domestic AI infrastructure base.

Central to the strategy is integrating renewable energy with computing. The group plans to invest an additional $55 billion to expand renewable generation and battery energy storage to supply carbon-neutral power to the facilities. Adani aims to deploy up to 5 gigawatts of data-center capacity, building atop its existing platform and partnerships with Google and Microsoft, as well as an expanded partnership with Flipkart. This effort builds on AdaniConneX, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and U.S.-based EdgeConneX, a developer and operator of data centers for hyperscale customers—large-scale data center operators. The joint venture has already developed about 2 gigawatts of data-center capacity across India. Power will be supported by Adani’s 30-gigawatt Khavda renewable project in western India, where more than 10 gigawatts is already operational.

To reduce exposure to global supply-chain disruptions, Adani plans to co-invest in the domestic manufacturing of critical components. This manufacturing push will focus on essential hardware like transformers and power electronics to secure the supply chain.

The projected financial breakdown of the ecosystem includes:

  • $100 billion in core investment over the next decade to build AI data centers.
  • An expected $150 billion in catalyzed related investments.
  • An additional $55 billion to expand renewable generation and battery energy storage.

Adani did not disclose the breakdown of committed capital vs. future spending.

Why it matters

The investment underscores India’s ambition to play a larger role in the global AI race by building a domestic AI infrastructure base, shifting the country from a consumer to a producer.
