Norm raises $120M at $1.2B valuation for AI law firm

Norm announced on Tuesday that it has raised $120 million in a Series C funding round—a stage of venture capital financing. The round values the almost three-year-old startup at $1.2 billion, pushing it into unicorn status, a term denoting a privately held startup company valued at over $1 billion. The company operates Norm Law, an AI-native law firm—defined as a service built from the ground up using artificial intelligence. This service uses the company’s own AI agents, employs human attorneys to supervise those agents, and offers legal services to enterprise clients.

In contrast to the rest of the legal industry, the company charges based on outcomes rather than billing its clients hourly. This outcomes-based billing model—which involves charging clients based on results rather than the time spent on a case—represents a shift from traditional legal practices. Norm is one of many legal AI startups that have emerged in the past few years, alongside competitors such as Harvey and Legora, looking to capitalize on the need to automate tedious legal work.

The Series C round was led by the venture capital firm Khosla Ventures. The funding round also drew participation from a mix of institutional investors and industry executives. The investors in this round include:

  • Bain
  • Craft Ventures
  • Coatue
  • Vanguard
  • New York Life
  • TIAA
  • Tony James, the former president and COO of Blackstone
  • Jeff Hammes, the former chairman of Kirkland & Ellis
  • Fenwick LLP

The fresh capital will be used to help build out the product and hire more attorneys. With this latest round, the company has raised more than $260 million in funding to date.

Why it matters

Norm represents the broader trend of legal AI startups attempting to disrupt traditional hourly billing models by automating tedious legal work with AI agents.
