Google launches Android 17 and Wear OS 7 with new AI features
Google has released Android 17 and Wear OS 7, featuring new AI integrations and claiming up to 10% better battery life for smartwatches.
Google on Tuesday released the final version of its Android 17 operating system, alongside Wear OS 7, its counterpart for smartwatches. The release arrives first on Google’s own Pixel devices and is accompanied by a Pixel Drop—which is Google’s feature update mechanism for Pixel devices. This update marks a significant push by the company to integrate its Gemini AI models directly into the mobile and wearable experience. The latest feature release underscores Google’s strategy of using its Android and Pixel devices to showcase its latest AI technology.
The update introduces several hardware-specific features and user interface enhancements. Key features included in this release are:
- The Bubble Bar: A new user interface element for app organization that lets users organize, move, and quickly access recent apps that appear as bubbles at the bottom of the screen.
- Foldable Gaming Mode: A new mode for foldable devices that offers a 50/50 layout with a dynamic game pad.
- Take a Message: A communication feature that allows users to record a personalized outgoing audio message for callers when they cannot answer. This feature will now arrive in more global markets.
- Pixel Watch Safety: The Pixel Watch gains emergency detection capabilities. If the smartwatch detects a car crash, fall, or lack of pulse, it will automatically contact emergency services and selected emergency contacts.
For wearable users, Wear OS 7 introduces both performance and intelligence updates. Google claims battery life improvements of up to 10% for smartwatches running the new operating system. The update also brings multistep automation to Wear OS, alongside new AI-driven personalization tools. These tools allow users to create personalized widgets simply by describing them, and the system will offer personalized intelligence by connecting Google apps and chat history with Gemini.
