Anduril is launching an autonomous drone racing contest, the AI Grand Prix, offering a $500,000 prize pool and jobs while hoping for at least 50 participating teams.

Anduril, the defense technology company, is launching an autonomous drone racing competition called the AI Grand Prix. The contest is designed to recruit software engineering talent by testing their ability to program drones to fly themselves, rather than relying on human pilots. Instead of traditional marketing sponsorships, the company is using the event to demonstrate its core autonomous capabilities directly to potential hires.

The competition is open to international entrants and will feature a structured timeline and incentive package:

  • The Prize Pool: A $500,000 prize pot to be split amongst the highest-scoring teams, alongside potential job offers at Anduril.
  • The Timeline: Three qualifying rounds will begin in April 2026, leading up to the final Grand Prix race in November 2026.
  • The Location: The final race will take place in Ohio, where Anduril operates a key manufacturing facility.

To run the event, Anduril is partnering with the Drone Champions League, a racing league partner, and JobsOhio, an economic development organization. Participating teams will not fly Anduril’s own hardware. Instead, the contest will utilize quadcopter drones provided by Neros Technologies, a defense tech startup. Anduril founder Palmer Luckey noted that Anduril’s own drones are too physically large for the contained course in Ohio.

Luckey explained that the idea emerged during a recruitment strategy meeting where someone suggested sponsoring a traditional drone-racing tournament. Luckey rejected the idea of a standard sponsorship, recalling that he told his team, “Guys, that would be a really dumb thing for Anduril to sponsor. The whole point, our entire impetus and reason for being, is this pitch that autonomy has finally advanced to where you don’t have to have a person micromanaging each drone,” according to Anduril founder Palmer Luckey. Instead, he pushed for a contest focused on how well programmers can make a drone fly itself.

The company is hoping for at least 50 teams to participate, with initial interest already coming from multiple universities. While the contest is open to international entrants, Anduril is explicitly excluding teams from Russia. According to Luckey, the exclusion is because the country is actively engaged in the act of invading Europe. However, teams from China are permitted to enter, though any winning Chinese participants would face strict legal and interview qualification processes before receiving any job offers at Anduril, which builds weapons for the U.S. military.
