Apple integrates Gemini-powered dictation into keyboard
Apple launched a systemwide dictation feature in iOS 27, potentially impacting third-party apps, though it remains unclear if the update will improve workflows for those developers.
At Apple’s annual developer conference, WWDC 2026, the company launched a new systemwide dictation experience on iOS 27, which is the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. This new dictation feature is powered by the company’s new Apple Intelligence model. According to Apple, this dictation experience is built directly into the keyboard interface. The feature is capable of correcting spellings, punctuation, and capitalization, which allows the systemwide dictation capability to work across various applications on the user’s device.
The introduction of this native, systemwide tool directly impacts the competitive landscape for third-party dictation applications, such as Wispr Flow, Willow, and Monologue. These specialized applications previously faced platform restrictions starting with the release of iOS 26.4, an older version of Apple’s mobile operating system. Under iOS 26.4, users of these third-party apps were required to perform extra steps simply to activate a dictation session with their respective keyboards.
With the new built-in dictation experience, Apple’s native tool might get a leg up over these third-party applications in terms of ease of use. Despite this potential advantage, it remains unclear if Apple will allow an easier workflow for third-party developers with the new iOS 27 update, leaving the future of these specialized apps uncertain.
The integration also highlights the relationship between Apple and Google, as Apple’s new dictation feature is powered by Google’s Gemini model. While Google is a competitor in this space with its Gboard application, Apple is utilizing the Gemini model to power its Apple Intelligence dictation experience. Apple’s move comes after Google released a similar feature with Gboard, powered by Gemini, that works across the system.
Why it matters
Apple’s new systemwide dictation feature, powered by Google’s Gemini, integrates directly into the keyboard, potentially impacting the utility of third-party dictation apps that Apple previously restricted.
