Apple updates App Store with personalized discovery features

Apple is introducing personalized App Store recommendations based on user behavior, initially launching in English in the U.S. to help developers re-engage customers.

Apple updates App Store with personalized discovery features

This week, Apple announced a series of new discovery features for the App Store, introducing personalized recommendations based on user interests and behavior. Announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the update marks a transition away from traditional browsing toward a highly tailored user experience. These personalized suggestions will initially be available in English in the U.S., with the features expected to expand to other regions and languages over time.

At the core of the update are Personalized Collections, which showcase recommendations tailored to individual users. These collections will feature App Notes, which are explanatory notes detailing exactly why specific apps were recommended to a user. The suggestions will appear in various places in the App Store, including the Apps, Games, and Search tabs, and will evolve over time based on a user’s app usage and downloads.

For developers, the update provides several new tools to customize their product pages and manage their offerings. Developers will be able to use rich images and videos in their product page headers to highlight seasonal content or new features. To streamline this process, Apple is launching an Asset Library, a new tool that allows developers to store and organize marketing materials for in-app events, sales, and promotions.

The update also introduces new options for subscription-based businesses. Developers will be able to offer App Bundles, allowing them to partner with other developers to package groups of subscription apps together. Additionally, developers will be able to sell subscriptions to larger groups and organizations using new multi-user in-app purchase options. These tools could help developers re-engage existing customers and promote special offers.

This shift highlights the maturity of the App Store ecosystem. Traditional editorial featuring is no longer sufficient to drive guaranteed growth for developers in a highly competitive market. By providing these personalized discovery and retention tools, Apple is shifting the focus from manual editorial curation to algorithmic personalization and developer-led engagement.

Why it matters

The update signals the maturity of the App Store ecosystem, where traditional editorial featuring is no longer sufficient to guarantee growth. As competition for user attention intensifies, Apple is shifting toward algorithmic personalization and giving developers more direct tools to manage customer retention and re-engagement.
