Snap loses top Specs executive ahead of AR glasses launch

Snap has lost Scott Myers, its Senior Vice President of Specs—Snap’s AR glasses—following a reported dispute with Chief Executive Officer Evan Spiegel. The tech blog Sources originally reported that Myers left the company over a supposed blow-up with Spiegel. When reached for comment by TechCrunch, a Snap spokesperson stated that Myers had decided to step down from his role at the company. The spokesperson thanked Myers for his contributions and wished him well in his next chapter. While the spokesperson disputed the blow-up characterization of the departure, they declined to reveal further details regarding Myers’ exit.

The executive departure comes at a critical moment, as Snap plans to release the newest version of its AR glasses, Specs, later this year. Snap has teased the commercial release of Specs for quite a while and, in recent months, has signaled that it is getting serious about the product’s launch. A Snap spokesperson stated that the company is eager to bring the AR glasses to the public later this year, remaining focused on disciplined execution and long-term value creation for developers, the community, and shareholders. To prepare for the launch, Snap spun off the Specs team into a distinct subsidiary, Specs Inc., in January. The company stated the reorganization would allow for greater operational focus and alignment. It remains unclear when exactly Myers left the company or what the alleged dispute entailed. However, when a user on X asked Sources author Alex Heath about the nature of the reported dispute, Heath replied that it was about strategy, adding that he could not reveal more.

Myers joined the Snap team in 2020, bringing hardware experience from previous roles at SpaceX, Apple, and Nokia, according to his LinkedIn profile. In an interview with Tom’s Guide last summer, Myers described the development process for the AR glasses as an entirely new paradigm. During the interview, he emphasized the difficulty of perfecting the device’s physical design, noting, “I don’t want to see people wearing a wire coming out of the back of their head.”

Why it matters

Snap is preparing to launch a new version of its AR glasses, Specs, making the departure of the Senior Vice President of the project a significant strategic shift at a critical time. The transition highlights the operational pressures of commercializing augmented-reality hardware.
