Deezer releases free AI music detector for 20 streaming services
Deezer launched a free tool to identify AI-generated tracks across 20 streaming platforms, as the company reports that 44% of its new music uploads are AI-generated.
On Thursday, music streaming service Deezer introduced a free online tool that scans playlists from various streaming platforms to identify AI-generated tracks. The tool supports 27 languages and is compatible with 20 of the most popular platforms, allowing users to check if their playlists contain synthetic music. Compatible services supported by the new tool include Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music. To use the tool, users visit Deezer’s AI music detector website, select their streaming service, and allow the tool to access their playlists. Once imported, the service scans the tracks for AI-generated content, notifies the user of any findings, and offers an option to share the results.
The launch of the detector highlights the massive scale of synthetic content currently entering the digital music ecosystem. Deezer revealed that 44% of all new music uploaded to its platform is AI-generated. The streaming service is currently being flooded with nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks daily, which translates to over two million each month. Despite this massive volume of uploads, actual listener engagement with synthetic music remains low, with AI-generated tracks accounting for just 1-3% of total streams.
While consumer demand is low, the financial implications of these uploads are significant. Around 85% of these streams are flagged as fraudulent and are demonetized by the platform. This high rate of fraudulent activity highlights the ongoing challenges streaming platforms face regarding potential manipulations in streaming systems.
In a statement, CEO Alexis Lanternier emphasized the company’s focus on industry transparency. “By detecting and tagging AI-generated music over the past year and a half, Deezer has been at the forefront of transparency in music streaming. No other company has followed our lead yet, so we decided to make it possible for everyone to check if their playlists include synthetic music, no matter which streaming platform they use,” Lanternier said.
Looking ahead, the company is carefully considering future steps to manage the influx of synthetic content. These potential measures include updating supplier policies or removing content. Taking these steps would follow the precedent of platforms like Bandcamp, which banned AI music earlier this year.
Why it matters
Deezer is positioning itself as a leader in AI transparency, using this tool to differentiate itself from competitors while grappling with the reality that nearly half of its new content is synthetic.
