Elon Musk has outlined plans for a chip-building collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. According to a report by Bloomberg, Musk shared his plans on Saturday night at an event in downtown Austin, Texas. A photo shown at the event suggests that the new facility, which Musk has named “Terafab,” will be built near Tesla’s Austin headquarters and gigafactory—Tesla’s large-scale manufacturing facility.

Musk explained that he is pursuing the project because semiconductor manufacturers are not producing chips quickly enough to meet the artificial intelligence and robotics needs of his companies. To address these supply constraints, the proposed facility will focus on manufacturing chips designed to support computing infrastructure. Specifically, the goal is to manufacture chips that can support 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power per year on Earth, along with a terawatt in space. Emphasizing the necessity of the project, Musk stated: “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.” Musk did not offer a timeline for these plans, leaving the schedule for the facility’s construction and eventual production capacity unspecified. The target of 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power per year on Earth, combined with a terawatt in space, highlights the scale of the computing infrastructure Musk envisions for his companies’ future operations.

While the project addresses semiconductor supply constraints, the announcement has met with caution. Bloomberg reported that Musk does not have a background in semiconductor manufacturing, but he does have a history of overpromising on goals and timelines.
