Focused Energy raises $240M for laser-powered fusion
Germany-based Focused Energy raised an oversubscribed $240 million Series A to advance its laser-powered fusion technology, bringing its total private capital to $300 million.
Germany-based fusion startup Focused Energy has closed an oversubscribed $240 million Series A funding round. The announcement, made last week, brings the company’s total private capital raised to $300 million, according to the company. Alongside this private funding, the startup has also received $200 million in grants, positioning it among the most heavily funded startups in the fusion sector.
The company is developing a reactor that uses lasers to compress fusion fuel, an approach known as inertial confinement. Focused Energy is basing its reactor design on experiments conducted at the National Ignition Facility (NIF)—a research facility using lasers for fusion—which is hosted at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The connection to the facility is reinforced by the addition of Debbie Callahan, who helped design the fuel target at the NIF and joined Focused Energy in December as its Chief Strategy Officer.
At Focused Energy, Callahan is working to simplify the fuel target. While the NIF facility only fires about 400 shots per year, Focused Energy will need to achieve 10 shots per second, which translates to about 864,000 shots per day. To reach this scale, the company is bypassing the use of a hohlraum—a precision-manufactured gold cylinder used to convert laser energy into X-rays to compress the fuel. Instead, Focused Energy is employing a “direct drive” approach, a laser system that directly compresses the fuel pellets to improve reactor efficiency.
Focused Energy is hoping to build its first demonstration system, named Lighthouse, at a decommissioned nuclear fission power plant site in Germany. The site was previously operated by the utility company RWE, which served as the main investor in the Series A round. Other participants in the funding round included the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND), Prime Movers Lab, and the European Innovation Council Fund.
The investment comes amid sustained funding activity in the broader fusion sector. Several industry peers have also secured significant capital recently:
- Thea Energy raised $100 million to develop its fusion reactor.
- Inertia Enterprises secured a $450 million Series A round.
- Type One Energy raised almost $90 million toward a $250 million Series B target.

The $240 million Series A is one of the largest early-stage rounds for a fusion power startup, signaling continued investor appetite for high-capital, long-horizon energy technology.
