Google introduces AI-powered meme generator in Photos app

Google has introduced “Me Meme,” a new generative AI-powered feature within its Google Photos application. The tool allows users to combine a photo template with an image of themselves to generate a customized meme. Formally announced on Thursday via Google’s Photos Community site, the feature is scheduled to roll out to iOS and Android users in the U.S. over the coming weeks, according to a representative for the company who spoke to TechCrunch.

The feature is currently experimental, and Google has noted that generated images “may not perfectly match the original photo.” The tool’s development was first reported last October by the technology blog Android Authority, which spotted the feature in development. Because the feature is not yet fully rolled out, Google has cautioned that users might not see it in their updated Google Photos app immediately.

The addition of “Me Meme” serves as a practical application of Gemini AI, Google’s artificial intelligence technology, and specifically its Nano Banana component. By integrating creative, user-focused AI tools directly into Google Photos, the company aims to encourage users to regularly return to its application. This positioning is intended to keep users engaged within Google’s ecosystem rather than losing them to competing products, such as OpenAI, which has similarly leveraged user-centric AI features to drive engagement.

Why it matters

This feature represents a strategic effort by Google to drive consumer adoption of its Gemini AI technology through low-stakes, highly shareable interactions. By embedding these creative tools directly within Google Photos, the company seeks to maintain user engagement and prevent churn to alternative generative AI platforms.
