Google announced on Wednesday that it is introducing a native Gemini app for Mac. The new application allows users to access Gemini from anywhere on their Mac using a keyboard shortcut. “Now, you can bring up Gemini from anywhere on your Mac with a quick shortcut (Option + Space) to get help instantly, without ever switching tabs,” Google, the company behind the app, stated. The software is available globally starting today to all Gemini users on macOS 15 and up.

The keyboard shortcut, which uses the Option + Space key combination, is designed to let users summon the assistant instantly from any active screen. This setup allows users to receive assistance without needing to switch browser tabs or interrupt their active workspace.

Google highlighted practical office use cases for the new integration. For instance, a user drafting a market report can use the app to verify a specific date, while someone building a budget in a spreadsheet can query the assistant to find the correct formula. In both scenarios, the user can obtain the necessary answer and immediately return to their primary task.

In addition to text-based assistance, the application supports creative workflows by integrating media tools. Specifically, users can perform image generation using Nano Banana, as well as video generation using Veo.

With this launch, Google is positioned to close the feature gap with rival companies that already offer dedicated Mac applications. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have previously released their own Mac apps, making Google’s entry a key step in matching the desktop availability of its competitors.

Why it matters

By launching a native macOS application, Google is closing the feature gap with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. Bringing the Gemini assistant directly into the desktop workflow allows the company to keep pace with competitors whose tools are already accessible outside of a web browser.
