Google updates Gemini app with new AI agents and video tools
Google updated its Gemini app with a new interface, a 24/7 AI agent called Gemini Spark, and the Gemini Omni video model to compete with ChatGPT and Claude.
At its annual Google I/O event on Tuesday, Google announced a major overhaul of its Gemini app, introducing a series of updates designed to transition the application from a standalone chatbot into an all-purpose AI hub. The updates include a redesigned user interface, a new “Daily Brief” feature, a personal AI agent called Gemini Spark, and access to a new AI video model called Gemini Omni. These updates signal Google’s push to make the Gemini assistant more competitive with rival AI applications like ChatGPT and Claude. The new Daily Brief feature is designed to prioritize tasks and suggest next steps, and Google is rolling out this feature today to Google AI subscribers in the United States.
The Gemini app already has a broad reach, serving more than 900 million monthly users across over 230 countries and supporting more than 70 languages. To update the application, Google rebuilt it from the ground up using a new design language called “Neural Expressive.” This interface update moves away from the standard walls of text typical of AI chatbots. Instead, the redesigned app presents key information in bold at the top of the screen, while additional text and other elements appear as the user scrolls down.
A key addition to the platform is Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent designed to work in the background on behalf of the user. Because Gemini Spark is cloud-based, it continues to run even when a user’s mobile device is locked. Google expects to make Gemini Spark available next week to Google AI Ultra subscribers, which is the company’s premium paid subscription tier.
Additionally, Google is integrating Gemini Omni, a new AI video model that combines Gemini with generative media models to produce outputs grounded in knowledge. This model allows users to upload audio, images, and video to generate consistent video content. Gemini Omni is rolling out to Google Flow and YouTube Shorts for Google AI subscribers, supporting the company’s broader push into multimodal content creation.
Why it matters
Google is evolving Gemini from a simple chatbot into a proactive, multimodal AI hub, directly challenging the market dominance of ChatGPT and Claude by integrating deeper into user workflows.
