Google now lets users sign in with a selfie video, using guided head movements to verify a real person — not a deepfake — is behind the camera.
Google announced on Thursday that users can now sign in to their accounts with a selfie video, joining a growing wave of tech companies betting that biometrics, not passwords, are the future of online identity verification. The company says selfie videos give users an additional way to get back into their accounts if they are ever locked out or don’t have access to their usual phone or computer.
To set up the feature, users look at their device’s camera and complete a few guided head movements — such as turning right or left, or nodding — to capture multiple angles of their face. If someone is later having trouble signing in, they can record another selfie video, and Google compares it against the one taken at setup to confirm it’s the same person.
The harder problem Google is trying to solve, though, is proving that a real human — not a bot or a doctored video — is on the other side of the camera. “When you use a selfie to sign in, we use multiple layers of security to help prevent impersonation attempts like fake photos and videos (i.e., deep fakes),” Google wrote in a blog post. “For example, we match your video against your saved selfie and require you to perform simple movements to prove it’s a live video. We also use our standard security practices to detect and help prevent suspicious sign-in attempts.”
The move isn’t just about individual accounts. As AI-generated video becomes more convincing, “liveness” checks are becoming a baseline requirement for any company handling logins, payments, or other sensitive data.
The new option could help protect accounts from fraud and help users recover ones that are locked, but it also raises concerns around user privacy and biometric data collection — an area regulators have increasingly scrutinized as more companies build products around facial and voice data. Google says selfie videos are stored securely using encryption and remain protected even when not in use, and that users can delete the videos from their Google account at any time.
