Supplier error triggers recall of more than 4,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs

Lucid Motors has issued a safety recall affecting more than 4,000 of its Gravity SUVs. The recall was initiated after the automaker identified a safety issue involving improperly welded seat belts. Specifically, the defect involves the anchors for the SUV’s second-row seat belts, which were found to be improperly welded. This defect creates a risk that the seat belts would not hold passengers during a collision, compromising the vehicle’s safety performance. The issue was first detected in January during unrelated safety testing conducted by the company. This recall comes as a setback for Lucid Motors, which had seemed to have largely resolved its initial quality struggles with the Gravity SUV’s hardware and software. Although the company appeared to be moving past those early difficulties, the newly identified safety issue shows that the automaker is not yet out of the woods.

Following the discovery, Lucid Motors notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (the US auto safety regulator) about the defect. The automaker attributed the issue to its seat supplier, stating that the supplier changed its manufacturing process “without notice to or approval by Lucid.” According to the company, the supplier has since reverted to Lucid Motors’ original design specifications. This unauthorized change in the manufacturing process by the supplier is what led to the improperly welded seat belts being installed in the vehicles. By reverting to the original design specifications, the supplier has corrected the manufacturing process going forward, but the vehicles produced during the period of the unauthorized change remain affected.

The scope of the recall is limited to Gravity SUVs manufactured before the cutoff date of February 14, 2026. To address the safety risk, Lucid Motors will inspect all of the affected Gravity SUVs. Depending on the quality of the weld found during the inspection, the automaker will either install a reinforcing bracket or replace the seat entirely. This inspection process is designed to ensure that every vehicle meets safety standards before being cleared, with the remedy being applied based on the specific condition of each vehicle’s second-row seat belt anchors.

Why it matters

The recall of more than 4,000 Gravity SUVs due to a safety issue with seat belt anchors marks a setback for Lucid Motors. The defect emerges after the automaker appeared to have resolved its initial quality struggles.
