Meta is reportedly developing a prediction market app called Arena
Meta is reportedly developing an experimental, non-monetary prediction market app internally called "Arena" that could eventually integrate financial betting.
According to a report by The New York Times, Mark Zuckerberg wants Meta to develop its own prediction market app. A prediction market is a market created for the purpose of trading the outcome of events. The proposed smartphone application, which is internally called “Arena,” would operate independently of Meta’s other social media platforms. Sources told the publication that while the concept for Arena can be described as “experimental,” the project is currently a “top priority” for the company. Initially, the application would not involve real money. Instead, it would function essentially as a game where users would earn points for betting correctly on particular topics, though sources noted that financial features could be integrated into the app at a later date.
The initiative comes amid a broader surge of interest and capital flowing into the prediction market sector. As of April, trading volume on platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi had reached tens of billions of dollars. Other social media companies have already sought to capitalize on this momentum; last summer, X forged a partnership with Polymarket.
Despite this commercial momentum, the prediction market industry is navigating severe legal and regulatory headwinds. States have begun to sue prediction markets over what they allege are violations of gambling laws, which are the legal regulations governing betting and wagering activities. The sector has also been complicated by high-profile legal investigations. For instance, George Santos is currently under investigation over alleged Kalshi trades. In another case, a former high-ranking special forces soldier was accused of using insider knowledge—defined as non-public information used for financial gain—to profit from the operation to capture Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.
Why it matters
Meta’s entry into prediction markets signals a major shift for the sector, moving from niche platforms to mainstream social media, despite significant regulatory and legal headwinds.
