OpenAI pivots strategy, abandoning side projects like erotic mode
OpenAI is abandoning side projects, including its erotic mode, Instant Checkout, and Sora, to focus on business and coding tools amid a major strategy shift.
OpenAI is executing what The Wall Street Journal reported as a major strategy shift to pivot the company away from distractions and zero in on its primary focuses: business users and coders. As part of this transition, the artificial intelligence developer is indefinitely pausing or shutting down several side projects. On Thursday, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI is indefinitely pausing plans to develop an erotic mode, which was a proposed adult-oriented feature for ChatGPT. This decision follows a series of pullbacks earlier in the week. On Tuesday, OpenAI announced it would be deprioritizing Instant Checkout, a proposed e-commerce feature for ChatGPT. Then, on Wednesday, the company announced it would be shutting down Sora, its AI video generation model.
The abandoned projects had faced significant internal and external friction. CEO Sam Altman first floated the adult mode in October, but the proposal drew backlash from tech watchdog groups and OpenAI’s own staff. In January, a meeting between company executives and its council of advisers got heated. During the meeting, an adviser on the council of advisers cautioned that OpenAI could be in the process of developing a “sexy suicide coach,” according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The Financial Times noted that the feature now has no timeline for release. When asked for comment on the indefinite pause of the feature, an OpenAI spokesperson stated that the company had no additional details to share. Meanwhile, Sora, which launched in 2024, had faced heavy criticism for inspiring a deluge of AI slop that has flooded the internet.
This consolidation comes as OpenAI faces competitive pressure from Anthropic, a direct AI competitor. The competition between the two firms also extends to government contracts. Three weeks ago, OpenAI announced a $200 million agreement with the Department of Defense, the US military agency. By shifting its strategy away from consumer-focused distractions, OpenAI is positioning itself to focus on these high-value enterprise and defense opportunities.
