OpenAI delays ChatGPT adult mode launch again
OpenAI has delayed the launch of its "adult mode" feature for ChatGPT for the second time, citing a need to prioritize other product improvements.
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company, has officially delayed the launch of its “adult mode” feature for ChatGPT, its AI chatbot product, for the second time. The feature is defined as a proposed option for verified adult users to access erotica. This latest delay pushes back a release timeline that had already experienced previous shifts. Originally, CEO Sam Altman announced the feature in October, framing it as part of a principle to treat adult users like adults. The launch was previously reportedly delayed from December to the first quarter of this year. With this second postponement, the timeline for the feature’s release has been extended further, and the original plans for a rollout in the first quarter of this year have been set aside.
The decision to delay the feature comes as OpenAI shifts its immediate development focus. An OpenAI spokesperson told Axios, the news publication, that the company is pushing out the launch of adult mode. According to the spokesperson, the company is choosing to focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now. Specifically, OpenAI is prioritizing other core development areas, including work on chatbot intelligence, personality, and making ChatGPT more proactive. “We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time,” the spokesperson said. Because of this shift in priorities, it is not clear how long the delay is expected to last.
The adult mode feature was first introduced by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, who announced the initiative in October. At the time, Altman framed the feature as part of a company principle to treat adult users like adults. Under this principle, OpenAI planned to roll out age-gating more fully to allow verified adult users to access erotica. However, the execution of this user philosophy has now been deferred twice as the company prioritizes other work like intelligence, personality, and making the chatbot more proactive. The first delay pushed the launch from December to the first quarter of this year, and this latest decision delays the feature indefinitely, as the duration of the current delay is unknown.
Why it matters
The delay signals a strategic pivot at OpenAI, where the company is choosing to prioritize core model performance and proactive capabilities over niche feature rollouts, even when those features were previously touted as central to their user philosophy.
