OpenAI policy executive reportedly fired after internal friction

Ryan Beiermeister, the former vice president of product policy at OpenAI, was reportedly fired in January. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, her termination came after a male colleague accused her of sexual discrimination. In her role as vice president of product policy—the corporate role overseeing product guidelines—Beiermeister was responsible for managing the rules that govern how OpenAI’s models interact with users and what content they are permitted to generate.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the firing followed significant internal friction regarding an upcoming ChatGPT feature dubbed “adult mode.” The planned feature would introduce erotica into the chatbot’s user experience. Beiermeister reportedly criticized the planned feature, raising concerns alongside other employees at the company about how the new “adult” feature could potentially impact certain users. Fidji Simo, who serves as OpenAI’s CEO of Applications—a role overseeing the company’s consumer-facing products—has stated that the feature is planned to launch during the first quarter of this year.

OpenAI stated that Beiermeister, who was fired following a leave of absence, had made valuable contributions during her time at the company. The company also asserted that her departure was not related to any issue she raised while working at the company. Beiermeister has strongly rejected the claims made against her. “The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false,” she told the Wall Street Journal.

Before her tenure at OpenAI, Beiermeister accumulated extensive experience in the technology sector. Her professional background includes working for four years on the product team at Meta. Prior to her time at Meta, she spent more than seven years working for Palantir.

Why it matters

The departure of a senior policy executive highlights the internal tension at OpenAI as it balances rapid product expansion—specifically into sensitive content areas like “adult mode”—with internal governance and policy standards.
