TV Time, a consumer app used for tracking television shows, will discontinue its service on July 15, 2026. The shutdown is driven by parent company Whip Media’s strategic shift toward AI-powered automation tools. According to data from app intelligence provider Appfigures, TV Time accumulated 26.4 million lifetime installs and recorded nearly 29,000 new downloads over the past 30 days. In its marketing materials, Whip Media often referred to TV Time’s more than 25 million users. Despite maintaining this consistent user base, the app is being shuttered. This move mirrors a broader industry trend where technology companies sacrifice consumer-facing products to prioritize artificial intelligence development. For example, Mozilla, the owner of Pocket, shuttered that read-it-later app as it prioritized building out Firefox and AI-powered browsing experiences.

Whip Media, which was acquired by direct lender and investment firm Blue Torch Capital in early 2025, stated that operating the free app was no longer sustainable. In an in-app message, the company explained the decision: “While we loved supporting TV Time, it was no longer sustainable to continue operating the service as a free app, and there was not enough demand for a paid app,” the message read. The company expressed gratitude to the community of users who tracked, discovered, and shared their love of television and movies, noting that their passion and enthusiasm made the platform more than an app.

Under its new ownership, Whip Media is pivoting from providing sentiment analysis, ratings predictions, and content optimization to instead focus on Helix, its AI-powered automation and workflow management tool. Helix is designed to enhance streaming analytics and supply chain orchestration. Following the shutdown, all personal data collected via TV Time will be deleted and will not be used as part of any commercial service. The app will be removed from app stores on July 15, 2026. Before the service ends, users can request a download of their data through an export tool that is GDPR-compliant, adhering to European data privacy standards.

Why it matters

TV Time’s closure highlights a broader trend where companies are sacrificing established consumer communities to prioritize AI-driven business models, even when those apps maintain significant user bases.
