RJ Scaringe raises more than $12.3 billion across three startups
RJ Scaringe has raised more than $12.3 billion across three startups, with investors continuing to back his ventures despite broader market headwinds in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.
Serial entrepreneur RJ Scaringe has secured more than $12.3 billion in capital across his three ventures: Rivian, Also, and Mind Robotics. The latest funding round of $400 million for Mind Robotics, an industrial artificial intelligence and robotics startup, signals that investor appetite remains strong for his projects. This week’s raise follows a series of funding rounds for Scaringe’s newer companies, which have collectively raised more than $1.3 billion.
The funding breakdown across his three companies includes:
- Rivian: More than $11 billion raised, including a $700 million round in early 2019, a $500 million investment from Ford, $350 million from Cox Automotive, and a $1.3 billion round in late 2019. This was followed by a $2.5 billion round in July 2020 and a $2.65 billion round six months later, culminating in nearly $12 billion in gross proceeds from its November 2021 initial public offering (IPO) on Nasdaq at $78 per share.
- Also: An electric micromobility startup founded in 2025, which secured an initial $105 million in 2025 and has since surpassed $300 million in total funding.
- Mind Robotics: Founded alongside Also, the startup raised $115 million in its first year, $500 million in March, and $400 million this week.
Venture capital (VC) backers attribute Scaringe’s fundraising success to his communication style and technical expertise. Jiten Behl, a partner at Eclipse and former chief growth officer at Rivian, noted that Scaringe has a unique ability to communicate effectively and credibly. “When RJ explains a certain issue, topic, opportunity, vision, he just has this very unique ability to communicate it so effectively, and it comes across so credible,” Behl said. Investors TechCrunch spoke to also reported that Scaringe is able to separate selling the idea from selling himself, avoiding the common pitfalls of founder ego. Joe Fath, another partner at Eclipse, emphasized that Scaringe possesses a rare combination of engineering expertise and product design instinct, allowing him to understand what resonates emotionally with both consumer and commercial buyers. This collaborative approach helps him manage his businesses while traveling between Palo Alto, Irvine, Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois, and a second factory soon to open in Georgia.
This fundraising momentum persists despite a challenging market for electric vehicles. Rivian’s market cap, which hit $100 billion at its Nasdaq debut, currently stands at $18.2 billion. However, the company continues to secure partnerships to maintain investor confidence. These include a $5.8 billion joint venture with Volkswagen Group and a robotaxi—an autonomous vehicle used as a taxi—partnership with Uber valued at up to $1.25 billion.
Why it matters
RJ Scaringe has demonstrated a rare ability to repeatedly raise massive amounts of capital across multiple disparate ventures, including Rivian, Also, and Mind Robotics, despite broader market headwinds in the electric vehicle sector.
