Roblox launches open beta for interactive 4D creation tools

Roblox has launched an open beta for its 4D creation feature, allowing creators to design interactive, functional objects that move and react within the platform.

On Wednesday, Roblox launched the open beta for its 4D creation feature, transitioning the tool from an early access phase that began in November. The new feature allows creators to build interactive, functional objects that move and react to players within the virtual world. This marks a shift from the static 3D models previously supported on the platform, introducing a layer of real-time interactivity to user-generated items. The first experience featuring this 4D generation is a game called Wish Master, which serves as a game experience featuring 4D generation.

To build these interactive models, the platform uses “schemas”—which are templates used to define object structure and behavior. At launch, Roblox is offering templates like the “Car-5” schema, which divides a vehicle into five separate parts: a main body and four wheels. This system allows the AI to generate cars with individual behaviors, such as spinning wheels, rather than a single, solid object that cannot move. The launch builds on Roblox’s existing open source AI model for 3D object generation, Cube 3D, which was designed to help users quickly generate digital items. According to the company, Cube 3D has generated over 1.8 million 3D objects since its release.

Looking ahead, Roblox plans to allow creators to build their own schemas to define how objects behave, giving them more freedom on the platform. The company is also developing technology that could generate detailed 3D models directly from reference images. Additionally, Roblox is working on a project called “real-time dreaming” to build virtual worlds using text prompts. Last month, Roblox CEO David Baszucki explained that the project would allow creators to build environments using “keyboard navigation and sharing real-time text prompts.”

The rollout of the open beta follows Roblox’s recent implementation of mandatory facial verification for users to access chat features. The company introduced this requirement in the wake of lawsuits and investigations related to child safety.

Why it matters

Roblox is expanding its AI-driven creation tools from static 3D objects to interactive ‘4D’ models, allowing creators to design functional items like vehicles and characters with assigned behaviors.
