Samsung debuts Black Matrix display tech for privacy
Samsung introduced Black Matrix display technology, initially for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which uses pixel architecture to enable per-app privacy modes and prevent shoulder surfing.
At its live event on Wednesday, Samsung introduced a new display technology designed to prevent “shoulder surfing”—the act of observing someone’s screen from a side angle to steal information. The feature allows smartphone users to turn on a privacy mode on a per-app basis, offering a flexible alternative to traditional physical privacy films. These physical overlays are typically placed on top of a screen to limit viewing angles, but they often come with trade-offs such as making the screen dimmer or making it difficult to share content with others. Samsung’s new hardware-level approach aims to solve these issues by integrating the privacy capability directly into the display itself.
The technology, which Samsung dubbed Black Matrix, utilizes a specific pixel architecture to control light visibility. The system uses two different types of pixels: narrow pixels and wide pixels. When the privacy mode is enabled, the display narrows the path of light emitted from each pixel to precisely control what is visible to the user. When the privacy mode is turned off, the wide pixels work in tandem with the narrow pixels to project light in all directions, restoring normal wide-angle viewing.
This pixel-level control allows for highly customizable privacy settings. The privacy feature is designed to work with specific apps to protect users when they are entering PINs, patterns, or passcodes. Users can configure the system so that sensitive applications, such as banking or messaging apps, automatically trigger the private viewing mode, while other apps remain visible to people nearby. This selective visibility also extends to notifications, allowing users to keep specific alerts private when the phone is viewed from an angle.
The new display technology will initially be available on the Galaxy S26 Ultra smartphone, which was introduced as part of the Galaxy S26 series. During the live event on Wednesday, creator Miles Franklin of the channel MilesAboveTech demonstrated the technology live on stage. The demonstration showed the per-app privacy mode in action, illustrating how the display can protect sensitive information from being seen by onlookers.
