Spotify launches Studio, a desktop app for AI-generated podcasts
Spotify has launched Studio by Spotify Labs, a desktop app that uses AI agents to generate personal podcasts from user data, currently available in more than 20 markets.
On May 21, 2026, Spotify released a new stand-alone desktop app called Studio by Spotify Labs. The application features an AI agent that can browse the web and fetch personal information to create a personal podcast. These AI-generated podcasts are saved in the user’s Spotify library and synced across devices. This launch follows Spotify’s recent release of a command-line tool that allowed users of coding tools like Claude Code or Codex to create personal podcasts. With the new Studio app, Spotify is bringing this personal podcasting capability to non-coders through a dedicated desktop interface.
The tool enters a competitive market for AI-generated audio, positioning Spotify against NotebookLM—Google’s AI-powered notebook and podcast generation tool—which popularized generating audio discussions from source documents. Other companies, including Adobe and ElevenLabs, alongside applications like Hero and Huxe, have also adopted similar formats for daily briefings and topic exploration. Spotify’s entry into this space highlights how major audio and tech platforms are competing to turn personal data into custom audio content.
With the launch of the desktop app, Spotify could offer more integrations for creating podcasts in the future. The company could also use the new app to capture system audio to become a Granola-style notetaker, similar to tools developed by startups like Rewind and Cluely. While this remains speculative, it represents a potential pathway for Spotify to expand its footprint beyond entertainment and deeper into daily productivity and workplace audio.
Currently, the app is available in more than 20 markets as an early research preview. Access is limited to select users who are 18 years or older. Because it is an early preview, Spotify warned that the AI can make mistakes and may output unreliable content all the time. This cautious rollout reflects the ongoing challenges tech companies face with AI reliability, even as they deploy agentic features to their user bases.
Why it matters
Spotify is evolving from a music streamer into an AI-driven audio platform, using agents to turn personal data into custom content to compete with tools like Google’s NotebookLM.
