Spotify launches podcast clipping feature for mobile users
Spotify is launching a global mobile feature allowing users to trim and share specific podcast segments, aiming to simplify content discovery and social sharing.
Spotify is introducing a new “Podcast clips” feature, rolling out globally on Wednesday to both free and Premium users on mobile. The feature allows users to trim and share specific audio segments from shows. To use the tool, listeners can tap a new scissors icon located in the “Now Playing” view of the mobile application. This action allows them to select a particular segment of interest from the podcast they are currently streaming. Users can then trim the selected portion of the audio and preview it to hear the playback before sharing it more publicly. Once satisfied, tapping the sharing button provides options to distribute the clip, alongside existing options to share the full episode, a specific chapter, or a timestamp. These clips can be shared broadly with audiences on social media, or sent directly to friends, colleagues, and others.
The release of this clipping tool arrives at a time when technology and artificial intelligence executives are increasingly using podcasts to bypass traditional media. By choosing long-form audio appearances over traditional media interviews, these executives are shifting where business and technology news breaks. However, navigating hours of audio to find key announcements has remained a challenge for listeners. The new feature makes it easier to share these specific podcast segments, helping key moments from lengthy interviews find a broader audience. Additionally, saved clips are stored directly in the user’s Spotify Library, allowing listeners to revisit their clipped segments at any time or add them to their existing podcast playlists.
This update builds on the traction of “Chapters”—a feature that allows users to save longer segments of podcasts. Since launching Chapters earlier this year, Spotify has seen significant engagement with the tool, with Chapters being saved and added to playlists over 2 million times per month. The introduction of Podcast clips represents a further step in modularizing audio content, allowing users to curate and share even smaller, more precise segments of their favorite shows. The feature is rolling out globally to Spotify’s free and Premium users on mobile, with availability expanding to more shows over time.
Why it matters
As tech and AI executives increasingly bypass traditional media for long-form podcast interviews, this feature addresses the difficulty of surfacing key news moments from lengthy audio content.
