Spotify launches ticket reservation program for top fans
Spotify is launching a ticket reservation program for U.S.-based superfans, using streaming data to offer exclusive access to concert tickets and boost platform engagement.
Audio streaming platform Spotify is launching a new program to reserve concert tickets for top fans of artists, a strategic move designed to increase user engagement on its platform. Under the terms of the initiative, eligible fans who are aged 18 or above and located in the U.S. will receive both an email and an in-app notification offering them the opportunity to purchase up to two tickets. Once these notifications are sent, the eligible users will have a dedicated purchase window of around a day to complete their ticket reservation.
To identify these “superfans”—defined as users identified by high engagement metrics like streams and shares—Spotify will analyze various user activity signals. These signals include streams, shares, and other activity on the platform. To protect the integrity of the program and ensure tickets reach legitimate listeners, Spotify will actively monitor user activity to prevent the gaming of these statistics via bots or AI agents. The company addressed the competitive nature of the ticket allocation, stating: “There will be significantly more superfans than there are seats available on a tour, so not every fan will receive an offer. And by only inviting validated fans, we will help ensure more tickets will go straight to fans instead of scalpers.”
Rather than managing the transactions directly on its own platform, Spotify is utilizing a partner model for this program. Under this business arrangement, Spotify facilitates the discovery and reservation of the concert tickets, but the actual financial transaction occurs on a third-party website.
The program is scheduled to start this summer, focusing initially on reserving tickets for select artists on their newly announced tours. Spotify plans to expand the program gradually to tours of different sizes. This launch builds on the company’s previous live event discovery features and its history of facilitating ticket sales. Specifically, Spotify experimented with direct ticket sales in 2022, but has since leaned into its partner model, through which it has facilitated over $1.5 billion in ticket sales for artists to date.
Why it matters
This initiative represents a strategic shift to deepen user engagement by gamifying streaming activity, leveraging Spotify’s existing live event discovery infrastructure to capture more value from the concert ticketing ecosystem.
