Tesla expands robotaxi pilot to Orlando and Tampa ahead of earnings

Tesla has brought an unspecified number of its unsupervised Model Y SUVs to Orlando and Tampa, one day ahead of the company’s scheduled second-quarter earnings call. The move marks the third Florida city where Tesla is trialing its nascent robotaxi service, following a small launch in Miami a few weeks earlier. Tesla has not disclosed how many vehicles are operating in either new city.
The two new operational areas appear fairly small, and Tesla did not offer further detail about the launch — consistent with a company that disbanded its press office years ago and now lets its rollout speak, city by city, through vehicles spotted on the road. Tesla’s own fan base has tracked the pattern: the company announced autonomous fleets in Dallas and Houston ahead of its first-quarter earnings release, but has yet to scale either of those operations up.
That pattern points to a company moving far slower on commercial robotaxi service than it once promised investors. CEO Elon Musk said repeatedly that Tesla’s robotaxis would serve half the U.S. population by the end of 2025 — a target that two more small Florida pilots does little to substantiate. Musk’s comments on the timeline turned notably more metered earlier this year, on Tesla’s first-quarter earnings call.
Regulation may still hand Tesla a shortcut. Last month the U.S. Department of Transportation proposed a rule change that would no longer require brake pedals in vehicles designed to operate autonomously. If adopted, that shift could clear the way for Tesla to deploy the dozens of two-seater Cybercabs the company has been staging in cities across the country.
Why it matters
A rule change removing the brake-pedal requirement would let Tesla put a fundamentally different vehicle on public roads, which matters more to the robotaxi timeline than two additional small pilot cities do.
