The total workforce at Tesla’s manufacturing facility outside Austin, Texas shrunk dramatically last year, according to a regulatory compliance report spotted by local news outlet Austin American-Statesman. This contraction occurred during a period when the electric vehicle manufacturer suffered its second straight year of declining sales, signaling operational adjustments at one of its primary production hubs.

According to the compliance report, the factory’s staffing levels experienced a significant drop:

  • 2024 factory workforce: 21,191 employees
  • 2025 factory workforce: 16,506 workers

This represents a drop of 22% in the local factory workforce. The regulatory filings do not make clear which specific teams or departments at the plant were most affected by Tesla scaling back its workforce.

This local reduction stands in contrast to the company’s broader global employment trends. While the Texas facility scaled back its headcount, Tesla’s overall global workforce grew during the same period. According to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (the US financial regulator), the company’s global headcount shifted as follows:

  • 2024 global workforce: 125,665 employees
  • 2025 global workforce: 134,785 employees

Despite the recent workforce reductions, Tesla remains one of the largest employers in the Austin area. The company has invested more than $6.3 billion in the facility to date, according to the compliance report. The factory has served as a central node in Tesla’s operations since CEO Elon Musk relocated the company’s headquarters to the site in 2021, prior to the factory officially opening in 2022.

Why it matters

The workforce reduction at Tesla’s Austin factory follows the company’s second consecutive year of declining sales, marking a significant shift in operations at one of its major production hubs.
