Anthropic report finds AI skills gap, not mass job loss, yet
Anthropic’s latest research finds AI has not yet meaningfully eliminated jobs, though a growing skills gap suggests significant labor market shifts may be ahead.
On Tuesday, artificial intelligence company Anthropic released its fifth economic impact report, which indicates that while AI is rapidly changing how work gets done, it has not yet caused widespread job displacement in the U.S. labor market. The report, which analyzes how technologies like Claude—the AI model developed by Anthropic—are being integrated into workplaces, suggests that the immediate impact of AI has been to alter workflows rather than eliminate positions.
Speaking in Washington, D.C., Peter McCrory, the head of economics at Anthropic, noted that the current data shows a relatively stable environment. According to McCrory, there is at least no larger material difference in unemployment rates between workers whose roles are highly exposed to AI automation and those in less-exposed, physical roles. However, Anthropic leadership warns that this stability may be temporary. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has reported that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and push unemployment as high as 20% within the next five years. To address these potential risks, McCrory told TechCrunch, “Displacement effects could materialize very quickly, so you want to establish a monitoring framework to understand that before it materializes so that we can catch it as it’s happening and ideally identify the appropriate policy response.”
Beyond immediate displacement risks, the fifth economic impact report highlights a widening skills gap. Anthropic found a growing skills gap between earlier Claude adopters and newcomers. Earlier adopters are more likely to get significantly more value from the AI model, using it for work-related tasks rather than casual or one-off purposes. These power users employ Claude in more sophisticated ways, such as a thought partner for iteration and feedback, whereas newcomers often scratch the surface of its capabilities. Additionally, this adoption is not evenly distributed geographically. Within the U.S., the report found that Claude is used more intensely in places with more knowledge workers, and for a relatively small set of specialized tasks and occupations.

The transition from AI as a novel tool to a competitive differentiator is creating a two-tier labor market, where the ability to effectively leverage AI models is becoming a primary driver of professional advantage.
