Freedom and other top tools to block digital distractions
From Freedom to Forest, these distraction-blocking tools help users manage focus and productivity across devices with various pricing models and features.
Freedom
Freedom allows users to block websites and apps across all devices simultaneously. Users can select specific platforms to block for set periods, start sessions immediately, or schedule recurring blocks. If a user needs to block all internet access or restrict access to only a few allowed sites, the software supports these configurations. To prevent users from ending a session early, Freedom includes “Locked Mode,” a feature that prevents the early termination of an active block. Freedom costs $3.33 per month when billed annually, or $8.99 per month when billed monthly. A $199 lifetime subscription is also available, and the service offers a seven-day free trial.
Cold Turkey
For stricter accountability, Cold Turkey blocks websites, applications, or entire internet access. Once a block is active, the software makes it nearly impossible to stop. It also features “Frozen Turkey mode,” a setting that locks the user out of their computer entirely. While the basic website-blocking features are free, users can unlock application blocking and scheduling features for a one-time $39 fee.
Opal
Opal is a focus and screen-time app that allows users to schedule “focus blocks”—designated periods that prevent access to specific apps and websites, including entire categories like social media or games. The app tracks productivity by providing focus scores and daily usage limits, alongside weekly reports. Opal’s basic features are free, but advanced options like unlimited recurring sessions cost $19.99 per month or $99 per year.
LeechBlock NG
LeechBlock NG is a free browser extension that prevents the loading of specific websites. Users can establish multiple block sets with distinct schedules. Instead of blocking a site outright, the extension can trigger a countdown delay, such as a 10‑minute timer, before a page loads to disrupt impulsive browsing habits.
Forest
Forest gamifies productivity by allowing users to grow virtual trees while focusing. If a user exits the app before the timer finishes, the virtual tree withers and dies. Over time, users build a digital forest and earn coins. These coins are used to fund real-world tree-planting projects around the world through the nonprofit organization Trees for the Future. The Forest browser extension is free, while the iOS app costs $3.99. The Android app is free with ads, or $1.99 for ad removal.
