Google Pixel Watch 4 review: A top contender for Android users

The Google Pixel Watch 4 features a brighter display and rapid charging, positioning it as a strong Android option despite real-world charging times that do not exactly match claims.

Google Pixel Watch 4 review: A top contender for Android users

The Google Pixel Watch 4 has established itself as one of the best Android smartwatches available, offering a refined design and upgraded hardware. For users transitioning from basic fitness trackers, such as those manufactured by Xiaomi, or traditional analog timepieces, the device represents a notable transition. A central feature of the upgrade is the curved domed Actua 360 display technology, which features thinner bezels than the previous model. This screen achieves a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, making it highly legible in bright daylight. While the test unit evaluated was the 41 mm size, the larger 45 mm model is the size the author would personally opt for to secure a larger screen and battery.

Battery performance and charging speeds are key highlights of the device. Google claims that the watch can charge from 0% to 50% in 15 minutes, and reach a full 100% charge in 45 minutes. In real-world testing, the actual charging times did not exactly match these advertised figures, though they came close to Google’s claims. This rapid charging capability allows users to quickly top up the battery during brief daily routines, such as making coffee or doing quick household chores, providing enough power to last throughout the day.

On the software and fitness side, the device integrates with the Fitbit health and fitness platform and Google’s Gemini AI assistant. The watch features Google’s refreshed Material UI design, which matches the aesthetic of the Pixel Fold smartphone. However, the fitness tracking features present some limitations. For instance, the watch requires 15 minutes of continuous activity for automatic cardio detection, a feature that proved inconsistent during testing. For gym workouts, the interface lacks specialized modes for specific equipment, requiring users to select from general options. Additionally, the quick start menu only supports three workout kinds. Outdoor testing, such as running, was also limited by the Delhi weather, which currently suffers from a terrible AQI. The author, who has been going to the gym for 15 days, noted that while the software experience is generally smooth, the fitness insights remain somewhat basic.

Why it matters

The Pixel Watch 4 offers improvements in display, battery life, and charging speed compared to previous generations, positioning it as a top contender in the Android smartwatch market.
