TikTok announced on Tuesday the launch of TikTok GO, a new feature that allows users in the U.S. who are 18 years and older to discover and book hotels, attractions, and experiences directly within the app. The feature surfaces lodging and activities through videos, search, and location pages, allowing users to view details, check availability, and complete bookings without leaving the platform. To power this travel booking capability, TikTok has partnered with several travel platforms, including Booking.com, Expedia, Viator, GetYourGuide, Tiqets, and Trip.com. Additionally, content creators who showcase these destinations can earn commissions by connecting their videos and content directly to bookings.

The launch represents a broader effort by TikTok to convert its discovery engine—its algorithm-driven content feed used for finding new products or places—into an active transaction layer, which is the infrastructure enabling direct purchases within the app. TikTok has executed this strategy previously in the U.S. market to deepen user retention and open new revenue streams. In 2023, the company launched TikTok Shop to bring e-commerce directly into the app, letting users buy products featured in videos. Prior to that, in 2022, it partnered with Ticketmaster to enable in-app event ticket discovery and purchases. By expanding this transaction layer into travel, TikTok is positioning itself to keep users inside its ecosystem from initial discovery to final purchase.

This expansion puts TikTok into direct competition with Google’s Search and Google Maps, which users have increasingly used alongside TikTok for search and travel planning. It also introduces a complex dynamic with its launch partners, such as Booking.com and Expedia, which act as both suppliers of travel inventory and competitors in travel discovery. Adam Presser, the CEO of the TikTok USDS Joint Venture—the specific entity managing TikTok’s U.S. operations—noted that millions of users already discover where to eat, stay, and go on the platform. Presser stated that TikTok GO connects “that moment of inspiration directly to the businesses behind it, and that’s good for creators, good for local businesses, and good for communities.”

Why it matters

TikTok is systematically converting its discovery engine into a transaction layer, deepening user retention and opening new revenue streams by keeping users within the app from inspiration to purchase.
