StoryGraph has partnered with Kobo to allow automatic reading tracking, marking the first e-reader integration for the platform and a direct challenge to Amazon’s Goodreads ecosystem.

Kobo becomes the first e-reader to sync with StoryGraph

On Monday, the reading tracker app StoryGraph officially launched an integration with Kobo, the electronic reading device (e-reader) manufacturer owned by Japanese conglomerate Rakuten. The partnership enables automatic tracking of reading habits and is now live for all Kobo account-based content. First announced in May, the software connection makes Kobo the first e-reader to integrate directly with StoryGraph’s platform. When a user finishes an e-book or audiobook on any Kobo device or Kobo’s apps, the progress automatically syncs and marks the title as “Read” on StoryGraph, keeping their reading statistics up-to-date.

The integration positions the companies as direct challengers to Amazon’s long-standing dominance in the digital books market. Historically, Amazon has maintained its hold on digital readers by pairing its Kindle hardware with Goodreads, the Amazon-owned book social network. While several Goodreads competitors have launched over the years, most have struggled to gain significant market share because they lacked direct integration with physical e-reading devices. By automatically syncing a user’s reading progress across Kobo devices and applications, the new partnership bypasses this hardware barrier.

The collaboration connects StoryGraph’s community of over 5 million readers with Kobo’s 12 million users across 190 countries. This expansion comes amid a broader cultural shift in reading habits. According to data from Pew Research, around 31% of U.S. adults reported reading an e-book in the past year, a significant increase from the 17% reported in 2011. StoryGraph, which was founded in 2019 by Nadia Odunayo and Rob Frelow, began as a side project and has grown entirely without outside funding. The platform has gained popularity by offering readers detailed charts about their reading moods, pace, and habits, alongside community features like reading challenges and book clubs.

The new integration does not require a subscription for Kobo users. However, StoryGraph continues to offer its StoryGraph Plus subscription for $5 per month, which provides readers with advanced analytics, custom charts, and comparison tools. The partnership reflects broader consolidation and feature expansion within the digital reading market, following other recent industry moves such as the acquisition of digital book community app Fable by Everand, an e-book and audiobook marketplace.

Why it matters

The integration makes Kobo the first e-reader to connect with StoryGraph, serving as a challenger to Amazon’s dominance in the digital books market by offering an alternative to the Kindle-Goodreads ecosystem.
