On Tuesday, website hosting platform WordPress.com announced the launch of a built-in AI assistant. Developed by parent company Automattic, the new tool is designed to integrate directly into the website editor. The assistant allows site owners to make changes to their website’s layout, style, and content using natural language commands. Instead of requiring precise code or manual adjustments, users can issue conversational prompts to modify the design and structure of their sites, with the changes reflected in real time.

The rollout of the AI assistant comes with specific technical compatibility requirements. The tool is compatible exclusively with block themes, which serve as the modern design framework for WordPress. It does not support classic themes, meaning the assistant will not appear in the editor for websites utilizing this legacy framework. For users who purchase a website through the platform’s AI website builder, the assistant is enabled automatically, while other users can choose to opt in to the feature through their site settings.

For visual tasks, the assistant leverages Google Gemini’s Nano Banana AI models. This integration allows users to perform image generation and editing tasks directly within the platform. Site owners can use the assistant to generate new images or modify existing ones, specifying design requirements such as aspect ratios and visual styles.

Beyond layout design and image generation, the AI assistant also functions as a content editor. It can assist with rewriting text, translating sections into other languages, and offering headline suggestions. This capability is integrated into the block notes editor—a collaborative editing tool that arrived in WordPress version 6.9. Within this collaborative workspace, the assistant can help teams with editing, fact-checking, and grammar suggestions, providing answers and citing external sources.

Why it matters

This integration shifts website management from manual configuration to conversational interaction, allowing site owners to modify layouts and styles through simple natural language prompts.
