On Tuesday, Apple announced the release of Xcode 26.3, the company’s integrated development environment (IDE) used by developers to build applications for its platforms. The update introduces native support for agentic coding tools directly within the development suite, allowing developers to use external agents such as Anthropic’s Claude Agent and OpenAI’s Codex. The Xcode 26.3 Release Candidate—defined as a version of the software that is a candidate for final release—is available to all Apple Developers starting today.

The integration of these agentic coding tools allows artificial intelligence models to tap into more of Xcode’s features, enabling them to perform more complex automation. To connect with these outside agents, Xcode leverages the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard used to connect AI agents to external tools. According to Apple, the company worked closely with both Anthropic and OpenAI to optimize token usage and tool calling, ensuring that the agents run efficiently within the IDE.

Developers can direct these agents using natural language commands to perform development tasks. As the agent works, it can break down tasks into smaller steps and verify its output. Apple noted that asking the agent to think through plans before writing code can sometimes help improve the process by encouraging pre-planning. To support developers in adopting these tools, Apple is hosting a “code-along” workshop on Thursday on its developer website, where users can learn how to use the agentic coding features in real time.

Why it matters

The integration of agentic coding tools allows AI models to tap into more of Xcode’s features to perform their tasks and perform more complex automation. By standardizing this connection through the Model Context Protocol, Apple is establishing a framework for how external AI agents interact directly with native development environments.
