Zendesk announced on Wednesday that it is acquiring Forethought, a company that builds software to automate customer service interactions. The acquisition aims to integrate Forethought’s agentic AI technology—defined as AI systems capable of autonomous action—into Zendesk’s customer service platform. The transaction is expected to close by the end of March, though the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Forethought has established itself as a significant player in the AI space since winning TechCrunch Battlefield, a startup pitch competition, in 2018. Prior to the acquisition, the startup raised $115 million in total funding, which included a $25 million round last year. By 2025, Forethought’s technology was supporting more than a billion monthly customer interactions for clients such as Upwork, Grammarly, Airtable, and Datadog.

According to Zendesk, absorbing Forethought’s technology will accelerate its product roadmap by more than a year. Zendesk plans to continue supporting Forethought’s existing customers while integrating its capabilities to build specialized agents, self-improving AI, and voice automation. Zendesk itself has been privately held since November 2022, when it was acquired for $10.2 billion by a consortium led by private equity firms Hellman & Friedman and Permira. The decision to keep the financial terms of the Forethought transaction private aligns with Zendesk’s historical acquisition pattern. While the company has completed roughly a dozen acquisitions since its founding in 2007, it has rarely disclosed purchase prices. Its historically disclosed transactions include:

  • $29.8 million for live-chat company Zopim in 2014
  • $45 million for analytics firm BIME in 2015

Forethought co-founder and chairman Deon Nicholas characterized the acquisition as a milestone for the company and the broader industry. Reflecting on the startup’s journey, Nicholas stated: “More than seven years ago, we set out with a simple but ambitious idea: AI could transform the customer experience. When we first launched Forethought at TechCrunch Disrupt, that vision felt bold—even a little crazy. Today, AI agents aren’t just transforming customer experience. They’re transforming every industry imaginable.”

Why it matters

Zendesk is betting on agentic AI to modernize its customer service suite, aiming to shave more than a year off its product development timeline by absorbing Forethought’s established technology.
